E-TEAM 11/7

Last week's tasks for Cradle of Filth and Killswitch Engage are still going strong.

CRADLE OF FILTH, HALLOWEEN TASK:

So as you all know, this past Tuesday, October 28th, Cradle of Filth's new album "Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder" started destroying shelves near you. Coincidentally (or not) the album release was just in time for All Hallow's Eve so we need you to do what you do best and promote the hell out of this, using Halloween discussions/sites as a tool!

Create a buzz/hype using lines such as: "Hosting or attending a Halloween party? Bring this CD along with you to add to the horrific adventures of the night."

Please edit the description below using your own terminology.

About this album: The album is conceptual and is based on the well-documented, true-life fall from grace of a shadowy historical figure named Gilles de Rais, a wealthy French nobleman who was one of Joan of Arc's brothers-in-arms. He was best known, however, as a prolific serial killer who mixed prayers with his nightly murders as well as an aspiring alchemist. He was accused of a panoply of crimes, among them heresy, demonology and kidnapping. There's even an extreme fringe sect of historians who question de Rais' true status, with some convinced he was framed.

Please also link to the album on Roadrunner's site here.

Target Band List:

Dimmu Borgir*Moonspell*Satyricon*Moonspell*Therion*Chthonic*Eternal Tears of Sorrow*Immortal*Naglfar*Dark Funeral*Children of Bodom*Nightwish*Within Temptation*Epica*Carpathian Forest*Amorphis*Behemoth*Old Man's Child

Post in all of your fave social networking groups as well as doing searches for new ones. In forums and messageboards, always make sure to look at the most current post dates to make sure that the site is active as are the members! To complete this task, you must respond to this showing all of your online work. We want to see LINKS to where we can check out your postings, news online, etc...LINKS. Perhaps you can copy and paste transmissions you've had with others...just prove to us you are spreading the word.

MLB.com Updates

There is a league-wide initiative to celebrate the 100th anniversary of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Soliciting artists to record their own version to video to place at www.mlb.com/babyruth. Also looking to cut together a line each from a few artists in one video for display on stadium Jumbotrons. Ends June 30th. Some current participants include Jimmy Buffet, Train, REO Speedwagon.

Their in-studio recording program is scheduling 2 big acts a month now. Also launching a similar Hot Prospects section at www.mlb.com/entertainment to focus on breaking bands. Doing 2 per month, more with label underwriting. Am looking to include The Parlor Mob, Theory, and Airbourne if possible.

New, quick program for MLB.com Highlights. Will combine music with highlight reels on site, which are also syndicated to and often picked up by television. Would require a very short form promotional license. Am positing TPM up front for this one as well as other on-going acts. This can be a rolling promo between us.

Sent by Elias:

Theory of a Deadman's "Got It Made" will be featured on JVC Mobile's web site starting on 4/15 at www.mobile.jvc.com.

On their homepage the song will come up instantly. It will be the only song played on the homepage for the next 12 months. They chose the song because of the lyrical lean, the fact that it rocks and it's a good fit for their mobile push.

The band name, song title and album title will be on the player and a launch button featuring the artwork and a link to their website will be in place.

The Parlor Mob - First Week Digital Sales News

Another Roadrunner first.

We released our first album digitally prior to a physical release with The Parlor Mob's AND YOU WERE A CROW with great initial success. Although on the surface this number may seem low what is incredible is that this band is literally starting from ground zero. No previous touring, no previous releases, no real fan base outside of Red Bank, NJ and we sold over 600 albums in their first week of release.

Check out some quotes from iTunes where the average rating was "5 Stars":

"I saw this band twice at SXSW and this is by far the best band I have seen live. That's a BIG statement, as I have seen thousands of band's live - but this band plays twice as good live as they do on the album - and they sound great on this album. I'd rate this album with 6 stars if I could"

"This album blindsided me because I had never heard of them. Just think Wolfmother but instead of 4 good songs, the entire album is awesome"

"Could Easily be mistaken for a new White Stripes CD" -

"WOW, This band right here gives me confirmation I needed that everything in the rock genre won't just be pop rock or punk rock and can actually be good! Definitely buying this"

"First time I've ever heard of them. I feel sort of left out now. White Stripes meets Led Zeppelin"

"Music speaks for itself. Shit is Legit"

Some hard facts to know:
The band has been on tour with Nicole Atkins for the last month and the tour ends at the end of this month.
We have a Residency Tour in the works starting in late April. Markets to include Boston, Philly, DC, NYC, Burlington, VT, Baltimore.
Band is CONFIRMED for LOLLAPALOOZA this Summer.
We will have a video for "Cant Keep No Good Boy Down", along with an EPK , by Mid April .

Theory - Airbourne Take NEW! By Storm

As we noted earlier in the month, Theory of a Deadman and Airbourne were both accepted into the ClearChannel NEW! program for March and were noted as "Artists to Watch." The program supports radio stations and their web campaigns with rich media and marketing.
I am pleased to report that Theory of a Deadman's "So Happy" is the #2 rock song this month so far, with labelmates Airbourne rounding out the top 10 at #10.

Gamestop Update

Via Madelyn Scarpulla

As promised, here is the Dragonforce clip that airs in all GameStop locations for the month of March. It's also streamed on the Channel M (GameStop TV) website. This was originally a :60 piece featuring the video and some of the interview footage edited by GameStop. As you will see, Channel M gave us more than TWICE what was committed: a full minute of intro from the host as well as 1:30 of video/interview footage for a total of 2:30 minutes of Dragonforce!

Enjoy: http://www.channelm.com/gstv/march2/dragonforce.html

Additionally, GameStop cameras conducted their own interviews with Airbourne last week in LA. Airbourne will be featured in a similar way for the month of April. Stay tuned!

Cavalera Conspiracy Beating it at Radio

Via Mark Abramson

The band is doing amazingly well in its second week. Without even truly putting the press on to be #1 yet, CC is easily #2, vaulting over other established bands. It’s the #1 album at Metal Specialty (we’re specifically addressing those stations that haven’t played it so far and ensuring that it will chart next week). WSOU is lined up to feature the entire album this week as well. Most importantly, Metal radio really likes the album, and it’s going to be played for a long time to come. We’re in a great position to be #1 next week, and we’re going to push hard to make sure that it is. Here’s the details:

CMJ Loud Rock - #2 (from 40)

FMQB Metal Detector - #2 (from 15), 184x/+83

Mediaguide Metal Specialty Albums - #1 (from 3), 49x/+16

Mediaguide Metal Specialty Songs:

“Sanctuary” - #1 (from 10), 17x/+9

“Inflikted” - #3 (from 1), 13x/-3

“Dark Ark” - D38, 5x

CMJ Loud Rock Select Albums - #9 (from 57), 43x/+28

CMJ Loud Rock Select Tracks

“Sanctuary” - #19 (from 98), 22x/+17

“Inflikted” - #41 (from 99), 9x/+4

Roadrunner Web Site Upgrades for January

January saw several improvements to the presentation on our artist pages. Some of these you've already seen, some have only been rolled out in the last few days.

Watching Videos and Downloading Music
As I explained in the internal web report last Friday, the music and video changes we introduced created an upsurge in media usage on www.roadrunnerrecords.com. Take a look at the Airbourne page for reference.

The prominent "Download Now" button under Free Music will get you an mp3 right on your desktop. In the Free Video section, we've introduced a scroller. Simply hover over it with your cursor and move the cursor to the right and then the left within the scroller. Clicking on a thumbnail will open the video in its own section right on the page, without ever leaving the artist content.

When there are not enough video thumbnails, the scroller reverts to a "Watch Now" button taking the visitor to the standard video page. (See that in action on the Opeth page before we get a kickass promo video through the door!)

Buzzword Bingo: User-Generated Content
So all has produced great, tangible results so far, but what about making all of that fan energy work for us? I'm glad you asked. Last May Andrew and I created the Within Temptation tour mini-site. I promised at the time that eventually a lot of what you saw there would make it to the Roadrunner web site.

Promise fulfilled.

Take a look at the DragonForce artist page. You probably noticed this at Airbourne, but since DragonForce is smack in the middle of fan interaction on the interwebs, we'll take it from there.

See the sections below Free Music and Free Video with a bunch of little thumbnails? They're labeled Your Photos from Flickr and Your Videos from YouTube. I'm sure everyone is familiar with YouTube by this point. (If not you should probably put the romance novel down and join 2006 at www.youtube.com.)

flickr may be new to you. It's basically a very popular photo site used by professionals and amateurs alike. It's very malleable and a wonderful place to create photo albums, slideshows, and more. What's even better is that it provides RSS feeds of most of its content.

Both the YouTube and flickr strips are scrollers like the Free Video one. Feel free to play around with them. When you click on a flickr photo, it will pop up in the center of your screen without leaving the main artist area. The same goes for the YouTube video, which you can watch right there and then come back to all the DragonForce news we post each week.

All fans have to do at either site is "tag" the photo or video with "dragonforce" and it'll eventually show up on our site. A tag is like a note left with the photo giving a description of what's in the photo.

If you click on the Video or Photo Gallery tabs to the left on any artist page, the respective strip will appear there as well.

Gaining Control
We recently began rolling out Wikipedia-based bios on the site on a limited basis. With input from the marketing staff, we've introduced another innovation in the creation of a tabbed biography. This allows us to present both the wikipedia bio and the official bio at the same time. Check out the Dream Theater bio for a great example.

There are still some formatting issues with these, but in general they all look great and give us something we didn't have before: an active, yet painless hand in influencing the direction of information on Wikipedia about our artists.

Whatever your opinion about Wikipedia, it's where our fans are going. Try a Google search for Dream Theater and their bio is the #2 link. Now we're actively sending fans to these bios to help clean them up. What's more we're sending them to Wikipedia with all the official information and content right there for them to use.

And, in the not-unlikely event of someone vandalizing say, the Slipknot entry with "Slipknot is gay," the bio can be reset on our site with the push of a button.

Minor Revamping
In addition to these uber-cool changes, we've introduced a minor, but effective one to our overall Artists page.

View it here.

Being able to feature certain bands on that page is a pretty obvious innovation I'm sorry I missed bringing to the table for the last year. Thanks to Jon and Andrew, we can now pull out and feature specific bands.

The Next Six Weeks
Expect tweaks and styling changes to all of these as we discover what works best. Also expect a wholesale revamp of the design and usability of our artist pages. We solicited and received a proposal and comps for a redesign of the artist pages that takes them to another dimension entirely. Expect a robust tool with which to super-serve our acts in the coming weeks.

DragonForce in GameStop

With over 3800 locations in the US and monthly traffic of 70 million, GameStop is the world's largest video game and entertainment software retailer.

GameStop DOES NOT carry music products, but their customers are our fans. There are several effective instore advertising vehicles to reach GameStop's core audience of 18-34 year old males, most of which are beyond cost prohibitive for normal record companies, but Roadrunner is NOT normal!

With the excitement surrounding Dragonforce in Guitar Hero III, GameStop's instore TV network has agreed to feature the band in their one-hour program that continually repeats for the entire month of March.

As a rule, Channel M only airs game-related programming (no music video or performance), but as Dragonforce is one of the stand-out artists in GameStop's top selling guitar game, they will feature a :60 clip of the "Through The Fire And Flames" video, plus a short clip of guitarist Herman Li discussing Guitar Hero III with comedian Brian Posehn. Also, the program's hosts will mention the band and album once an hour. (I will circulate the clip once it's edited and approved).

Channel M's research indicates average instore TV program awareness is 90%. Average unaided commercial recall is 48%, aided is 64%. We have found a great non-traditional way to identify our Guitar Hero enthusiasts and make them aware of Dragonforce.

This of course paves the way for other Roadrunner artists. Artists that are featured in a video game who deliver us game-related content (i.e. Airbourne talking about their favorite games, or comparing Guitar Hero to Rock Band, etc.) can be featured on Channel M in the future.

Our next step will be exploring video game-related music products or gifts-with-purchase that could possibly be carried in GameStop locations. However, the stores are currently video game purists, so this is a work in progress.

Power of Lists....The Mystery of Dec 6th, 2007

Checking Google Analytics the other day, I noticed that traffic to our RR website enjoyed a MASSIVE spike on Dec 2007 (click here to see PDF report). So big that it required further explanation. So Jeremy hunted around and determined that that was the day we sent out the Roadrunner ‘Top 10s for 2007’.

Why this filled my heart with joy is that it vindicates something I have been saying for ages…and still believe is paramount to all of our web content efforts: THE POWER OF LISTS. People gravitate to them like programmed drones. But for our purposes it means that we need to hunt down, create and purely invent lists pertaining to our artists….ESPECIALLY once we start with the fullscale e-mail blasting. What better subject line to get attention and drive traffic than: “Top 10 onstage disasters by Roadrunner Artists” or something of that ilk….

It would be great if people could help us come up with ideas for such lists, and also work with us to make them a reality. If possible, I would love to have a list go out with every bi-weekly E-Blast. I am also thinking about promoting such lists on the front page of RR's website....but they need to be compelling and inspire people to make the elusive 'click' through to the content......

All Points Bulletin: E-Mail Marketing Incentives

In concert with Jon's previous post asking you what you'd like to know about our subscribers, I am looking for suggestions on incentives to offer our subscribers in exchange for their giving us that extra information.

When we launch our new email program, fans will still go to our site or artist sites to sign up for the email list. The fan then receives an email asking them to confirm that they wished to subscribe. At some point from here we will ask them to enter additional info.

We would like to offer the incentive(s) to do so at that time.

I thought we could offer a 15-25% discount at a retail partner for filling in the extra information. We're already working on that idea with the Sales department, but I would welcome additional incentive ideas from everyone.

It could be physical or digital product, exclusive content, tchotchkes, or anything else that comes to mind.

Fire Away!

Super duper marketing info - need your help!

As part of our new, e-marketing planning we are scoping out the kinds of user profile details we would like to collect using the self-serve system that will soon be in place. That is, people on our database can shortly come to a page at our website and see their personal details (name, age, cell number, email address etc).

In the 'Round 1' database 'clean up' sweep we are only going after the basics. But in 'Round 2' we are going to make it attractive to our direct marketing user base to offer up far more detailed/insightful information about themselves. Stuff that we are thinkinbg would be useful to know include:
  • Favourite radio station
  • Favourite TV show(s)
  • Movies
  • Video games
  • Music retail store
  • Sodas/Beers/Food
We can come up with almost anything we like, but I am hoping the various departments can offer up some suggestions for us as to what you would like to know. Remember, this info can be fed back to you and might provide powerful leverage next time you (for instance) present a record to a radio station (ie. "We have 4,650 hardcore RR fans who listen to WKRP that we are going to e-blast next week to request the song!!"

So please have a think through this stuff, ask any relevant questions, and offer up some suggestions in the comments section below.

Blabbermouth on Airbourne (9)

Blabbermouth.net has an excellent review of Airbourne's "Runnin' Wild" up.

"Color me blown away. "Runnin' Wild" from Australia's AIRBOURNE is the best pure hard rock album I've heard in years. Brothers Joel (vocals/lead guitar) and Ryan O'Keeffe (drums), along with David Roads (guitar) and Justin Street (bass), have written an unequivocally classic rock album with fist-pumping jams galore. When one hears the number of youngsters attempting to be retro cool by incorporating classic rock elements and falling flat on their faces doing so, it is heartening to hear an act like AIRBOURNE do it so well and so right."

Within Temptation Featured Artist Playlist on 1/21

Last month the folks at imeem interviewed our very own Within Temptation about a bunch of their favourite songs. The interview has been combined with a playlist of those songs here and will be the featured playlist starting on January 21st.

As you can see, the playlist can be embedded on a web page, MySpace, Facebook and other social networking sites. imeem bills itself as "the top referrer to iTunes." Their tracks include direct paths-to-purchase on iTunes.
